Marc Schoenauer to work with Cédric Villani to define an AI strategy for France


Cédric Villani has been tasked by the Prime Minister with examining France's strategy on artificial intelligence (AI) within Europe. He will submit his recommendations to the government in 2018. To bring this project to a successful conclusion, he is working with by Marc Schoenauer, research director and head of the TAU team at the Inria Saclay – Île-de-France research centre and one of the few French mathematicians recognised in this field. He is also president of AFIA, the French artificial intelligence association.



Systems biology

François Fages rewarded at the Computational Methods in Systems Biology Conference


François Fages, head of the Lifeware team, has been rewarded for his work during the 15th international conference "Computational Methods in Systems Biology" which took place in Darmstadt, Germany, in September 2017.




Dave Marcum has received the IMR Fellow Award 2017


David Marcum has been rewarded for all of his work in the field of mesh generation by theIMR Fellow Award 2017.




Wendy Mackay is rewarded for her entire career


The University of Aarhus has decided to reward Wendy Mackay, head of the Ex-Situ team, for her entire career and in particular for her work on interactive video, participatory design and mixed reality.

On Friday 15 September, she was awarded the "Doctorem Scientiarum Hororis Causa".




Effective algorithms in formal computing


The work Effective algorithms in formal computing ('Algorithmes efficaces en calcul formel'), co-written by Frédéric Chyzak and Alin Bostan (SpecFun team - Inria), Bruno Salvy (Aric team - Inria), Marc Giusti and Grégoire Lecerf (Computer Science Laboratory of the École polytechnique) has just been published.

Initially aimed at students specialising in formal computing, on a wider scale this work will be able to serve as a reference or initiation for other researchers, in this discipline or others.

At Saclay, researchers will be able to study the brain in very high resolution

At the end of May, after six years in construction and over 14 days being transported, the largest human MRI scanner[i] - the Iseult project - arrived at the Neurospin research centre in Saclay. Equipped with the most powerful magnet in the world, generating a record magnetic field of 11.7 teslas[ii], this MRI will be able to explore the human brain with a hitherto unparalleled level of precision. The Parietal project team from the Inria Saclay - Île-de-France centre, a joint team with the CEA[iii] and located at the NeuroSpin research centre will, a few months from now, be able to work on this behemoth of technologies and push their studies of the brain even further.



International Chair

Project-team Gamma3 welcomes David Marcum

David Marcum, Professor at Mississippi State University (MSU), has been hired by Inria Saclay – Île-de-France research center within the framework of the International Chair Program. David Marcum joined the center in the beginning of May 2017 to strengthen his collaboration with Gamma3 project-team and work on "Unstructured Mesh Generation".




Laurent Massoulié  Grand Prix Cino Del Duca

On 7 June, Laurent Massoulié, head of the Infine team at the Inria Saclay – Île-de-France Research Centre and Director of the Microsoft Research - Inria Joint Centre, received the Grand Prix Scientifique Cino Del Duca 2017 , awarded by the French Academy of Sciences. He has won this prestigious science prize for his project on Social Information Networks.

"Black box" optimisation, speciality of the new RandOpt team

On 1 December 2016, at the Inria Saclay – Île-de-France research centre, RandOpt, was created: a new joint team with CMAP specialised in RANDomized OPTimisation. After several years of close collaboration, Anne Auger, Nikolaus Hansen and Dimo Brockhoff seized the obvious opportunity to create RandOpt together: the logical continuation of the work carried out within the project teams TAO (for Anne Auger and Nikolaus Hansen) and Dolphin (for Dimo Brockhoff). 




Datashape team to work with Fujitsu

Fujitsu plans to invest €50 million in France to develop its competence in data processing and artificial intelligence. The major Japanese firm is seeking to work with Inria's researchers, starting with the Datashape team.
