In addition to the Board of Directors, the Institute relies on a number of committees to support its strategy and activity, in particular its Scientific Board and Evaluation Committee. An Operational Committee for the Evaluation of Legal and Ethical Risks (Coerle) has also been set up to address the ethical constraints of the research carried out at Inria.

Because digital technology is a living material, these committees face a variety of issues: how to determine prospects for research in digital technology with the acceleration of innovation cycles? How to carry out assessments of scientists’ careers that promote the various dimensions of research in an institute like Inria, along with risk-taking and public/private mobilities? How to find the right balance between a principle of innovation and a principle of precaution for research in digital technology?

Inria's Board of Directors

Inria has a Board of Directors whose responsibilities are fixed by the articles R326-1 to R326-18 of Code of research. Bruno Sportisse is the CEO.

Inria's Scientific Board

Responsible for clarifying the research policy of Inria, the Scientific Board plays a role as consultant and expert to assist the Board of Directors. The Scientific Board is currently led by Manuel Hermenegildo, Professor at the Technical University of Madrid, who was appointed on 9 November 2017. He takes over from Kurt Mehlhorn, who had held the post since 2015.

COERLE

Operational Committee for the assesment of Legal and Ethical risks

Coerle operates at various levels: it advises project-teams and helps them cover their potential ethical and legal risks. When a matter is referred to Coerle, the committee examines the project then issues a detailed opinion, which might concern experiments or the publication of software, knowledge or data. Its chairman is Mireille Régnier.

Inria Evaluation Committee

The role of the Inria Evaluation Committee is to assess the calibre of research conducted at Inria and guarantee the quality of its hiring and internal promotions. Its president is Pierre Alliez, scientific leader.
