Interdisciplinary Institutes of Artificial Intelligence (3IA): the four selected projects
The results of the 3IA (Interdisciplinary Institute of Artificial Intelligence) call for expressions of interest were made public on 6 November 2018 by Frédérique Vidal, French Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and Mounir Mahjoubi, French Secretary of State for Digital Affairs. The projects of the Grenoble (MIAI@Grenoble-Alpes), Nice (3IA Côte d'Azur), Paris (PRAIRIE) and Toulouse (ANITI) sites have been selected. Inria participates in three of the four successful projects.
At the heart of the national AI strategy
Each of the Inria research centres took part in formulating 3IA Institute projects within the framework of the considerable mobilisation of the regional academic and industry ecosystems: they are part of the dynamic stimulated by the national plan on artificial intelligence announced by the French president following the report by Cédric Villani.
The Inria Grenoble - Rhône-Alpes, Sophia Antipolis Méditerranée and Paris centres are therefore at the heart of three of the chosen projects, alongside Inria's academic and industry partners.
Moreover Inria - coordinator of the research component of the national plan on artificial intelligence - will continue to take action in order to support all of the stakeholders and implement all of the actions intended to strengthen the national potential in artificial intelligence.
The 3IA projects selected
- Grenoble – “MIAI@Grenoble-Alpes”
Since obtaining the “Grenoble Alpes University IDEX", the Grenoble site has engaged in a dynamic of structuring and integrating its academic and research stakeholders, which closely connects economic partners and local and regional authorities. The MIAI@Grenoble-Alpes project will pay particular attention to the fields of personalised healthcare, medical devices, the environment and energy.
- Nice – “3IA Côte d'Azur”
Gathering together the main Université Côte d'Azur members with regard to artificial intelligence, such as the CNRS, Inria and the site's other academic institutions like the two engineering schools EURECOM and MINES ParisTech, and SKEMA Business School, the 3IA Côte d'Azur Institute - led by the Université Côte d'Azur - will bring together over a hundred researchers around training, research and transfer projects, particularly in the fields of healthcare and regional development.
- Paris – “PRAIRIE”: PaRis Artificial Intelligence Research InstitutE
Created by the CNRS, Inria, Institut Pasteur, PSL University and the University of Paris - and with the support of 16 industry partners - the objective of the PRAIRIE Institute is to become an international reference in artificial intelligence, in particular in the fields of healthcare, transport and the environment, by acting as a catalyst for exchanges between academic and industrial research.
- Toulouse – “ANITI”: Artificial and natural intelligence Toulouse Institute
The ANITI project, led by the University of Toulouse, is based on the work carried out in the fields of transport and aeronautic and space mobility, the environment and remote sensing, as well as healthcare. Local expertise in the human and social sciences will also be put into action in order to enrich the reflection process.
