The blockchain is one of the emerging technologies. It could revolutionize several sectors of the economy, starting with the banking and insurance sectors. The Utocat start-up, pioneer and expert in this field, has called on Inria in order for make advances in applied research with regard to this cutting-edge technology. A fruitful partnership, even if it was not a foregone conclusion.

In the spring of 2018, three math events clearly demonstrate that this dynamic discipline is not just for experts: the conference of the French Mathematics Society, the Mathematical Olympiads and TFJM² (the French tournament for young mathematicians). The winning TFJM² team at the national event is jointly coached by a doctorate researcher from the Inria Lille – Nord Europe research center.

The work of Daniele Calandriello, a doctoral candidate on the Project Sequel team at the Inria Lille - Nord Europe research center, has just received an award from the French Association for Artificial Intelligence (AFIA). He has developed a method by which machines retain only the essential elements of very big datasets in order to make them more independent.

Produced and presented every five years, the Inria Scientific strategic plan reveals the impending main lines of research and the scientific ambitions of the institute over the coming years and, more generally, aims to put humans back at the centre of digital technologies. The Inria Lille - Nord Europe centre's Technology Transfer, Innovation and Partnerships department (STIP) encourages the creation of start-ups by raising awareness among, and providing support to, scientists wishing to venture into entrepreneurship. Lille is the first Inria centre to have set up a post dedicated to this support.

In 2018, the Inria Lille centre celebrates its 10th anniversary - one marked by its expansion to the heart of the French Tech ecosystem. Inria has acquired a third building within EuraTechnologies in order to develop its research activity to serve technology transfer and innovation. The inauguration of this building will take place, by invitation, on Thursday 6 December. 'Open day' sessions of the demonstrator area will take place early 2019.

Each year, the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program awards grants of €15,000 to female doctoral researchers and €20,000 to female post-doctoral researchers for their research work. This year, 30 female laureates were rewarded among 900 candidates and Stéphanie Challita is one of them. She completed her thesis in the Spirals* project team at the Inria Lille - Nord Europe research center.
